WorkitoBreakstheDishes

By: Zehava Goshen & Maayan Ben Hagai illustrations: Eden Spivak

Workito's is a true story; a recounting of how Beta Israel used to prepare for Pesach in Ethiopia: "A time to keep and a time to throw away" (Ecclesiastes, 3:6): Just before Pesach, members of the Beta Israel community would throw away their old dishes, in keeping with the ancient tradition from the Land of Israel, whereby clay dishes were broken, and new ones made for Pesach. This tradition was passed on from one generation to the next, and was part of the preparations for Pesach designed to preserve the memory of the exodus – so that you may remember the day you left Egypt all the days of your life (Deuteronomy, 16:3)
