The Grand Prize

By: Netalie Gvirtz • Illustrations: Yaniv Shimony

Granddad’s beloved second-hand store is about to close down, but not before Granddad and Mickey hold a very special gathering there. Many people come to say their farewells to the store. What do they get? It’s a secret! Despite closing down his store, Granddad does not lose his joie de vivre (joy of life), teaching Mickey and all of us that endings can also be new beginnings.

Age Group: Second Grade

When Grandpa’s thrift store shuts down, Mickey is upset, until Grandpa shows him a special way of coming to terms with goodbyes, and even gets to make an old dream of his come true, and thereby reinventing himself. Together with Mickey, we learn that memories from the simplest, oldest items can also connect us to our story, families, and communities, as well as to who we are in this changing world.
