The Lion's Shirt

By: Uri Orlev • Illustrations: Dosh Gerstein

More than all the birthday gifts she received, Daniela loves her lion shirt. When the lion from her shirt runs away, Daniela tries to bring him back to her, and along the way she laughs, gets scared, overcomes her fear, and meets a new friend.

Age Group: Preschool (4-6)

“What kind of lion do you want to be?” Daniela asks the lion from the shirt, and in doing so touches on questions of self-image that occupy many children. As in the book, so in life—the world of night that calls freedom to the imagination, in which reality blurs, sometimes invites a journey into the soul, an encounter with fears and wishes, and time to process feelings and emotions.

We will seek our I, we will seek and find ourselves

(Rabbi Kook, ‘Orot HaKodesh’ 3)
