Kramer the Cat Goes into the Forest

By: Meir Shalev illustrations: Yossi Abulafia

When Kramer's friends refuse to play kitten games with him, Kramer responds by scratching and biting, and then runs off into the forest.  This story by leading Israeli writer Meir Shalev, with charming illustrations by top illustrator Yossi Abulafia, wryly accompanies Kramer as he flees into the dark forest and meets animals who come to his rescue. The parent suggestions focus on friendship and social interaction, through the saying attributed to Hillel the Elder "Do not unto others that which is hateful to you" (Talmud Bavli, Tractate Shabbat 31A).

“Do not unto others that which is hateful to you” (Talmud Bavli, Tractate Shabbat 31A)

Kramer’s encounter with the forest animals mirrors how his garden friends felt when he tried to play kitten games with them.

The Talmud tells of Hillel the Elder, who when asked to relay the Torah while standing on one foot chose the important life lesson “‘Do not unto others that which is hateful to you’ – that is the whole Torah, and the rest is commentary.  Now set off and learn”.

We all have times when we are not certain how to behave toward a friend.  Hillel teaches us a technique: First we should think how we would feel if others behaved in a certain way and which actions make us feel uncomfortable or hurt.  In this way we know how to act toward others: exactly as we would want them to act toward us!
