“Words that are short, tall, swollen; funny, angry, soaring words; mischievous, dancing, barefoot words; grasshopper words; giraffe words.”
Words, letter, and sounds are all treated with due respect in this funny rhyming poem that celebrates learning how to read in the marvelous words of Ayin Hillel, one of the foremost authors of Israeli children’s books.

Age Group: FIRST GRADE

The world opens up like a big old book:
Everything’s written here, come take a look!

In Reading and Writing, Ayin Hillel looks at a child who discovers how graphic symbols turn into letters that join one another to form words, and celebrates the joy of reading with him. Jewish communities have always celebrated the moment one enters the world of education: children were accompanied by a cheerful parade on their first day of school; candy was handed out or a board upon which letters were written in dripping honey. Learning how to read continues to be magical for any child who manages to string letters together to form words, as well as for parents who look at them feeling overjoyed and moved.
