Hanukkah in Alaska

By: Barbara Brown • Illustrations: Stacey Schuett

It’s Hanukkah, but even the festival of lights cannot make our protagonist happy. She is worried: What would happen if the moose in her backyard tears away her favorite swing with its antlers? Luckily, a special miracle happens on the final night, teaching us all about resourcefulness and Alaskans’ unique lifestyle.

Age Group: First Grade

Have you ever celebrated Hanukkah while watching the northern lights? Have you ever hugged a tree so that a moose would not get too close? The main character in this book exposes readers to the unique lifestyle of Jews living far away in Alaska. From her viewpoint, we discover that family and tradition have the power and ability to enhance displays of resourcefulness and confidence, and that miracles can happen in all sorts of places and come in all kinds of forms.
