The Golden Bell

By: Tamar Sachs • Illustrations: Yossi Abolafia

Itamar, the tailor’s son, lived at the time of the Second Temple. When a golden bell from the High Priest’s robe went missing, Itamar searched for it, coming to the Stone of Claims – where lost items are returned – every single day. Through his tale, we learn about the history of those days, and the culture of returning lost items to their owners.

Age Group: Preschool (4-6)

It is hard to imagine what life was like in Eretz Yisrael at the time of the Second Temple when there were no cars, and one traveled on donkeys, and when Jerusalem only had a single tailor who everyone knew. Young Itamar, who is looking for a small, lost bell, can help us travel back in time, learn about those days, the importance of hashavat avdea – returning lost property to its owner – and discover that, like now – children were sensitive back then, paid attention to details, and had overflowing imaginations.

“…anything that your fellow Israelite loses and you find, you must not remain indifferent”
