{"id":71217,"date":"2016-12-13T20:18:42","date_gmt":"2016-12-13T18:18:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pjisrael.org\/?post_type=book&#038;p=71217"},"modified":"2024-05-16T17:49:08","modified_gmt":"2024-05-16T14:49:08","slug":"the-patience-of-hillel-the-elder","status":"publish","type":"book","link":"https:\/\/www.pjisrael.org\/en\/book\/the-patience-of-hillel-the-elder\/","title":{"rendered":"The Patience of Hillel the Elder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Hillel the Elder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Hillel the Elder was a famous Jewish leader and a renowned sage and scholar during the time of the Mishnah, and served as head of the Sanhedrin.\u00a0 The Sanhedrin was a great council that governed the nation.\u00a0 Hillel\u2019s deputy was his friend, Shammai.\u00a0 Hillel was known by the respect with which he treated others, by his modesty and by the moderation with which he set forth Jewish law.\u00a0 Because of these characteristics his rulings were accepted, and they are acknowledged to this day.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Tales of our sages (&#8220;Chazal&#8221;) often teach us about people whose lives serve as models and whose behavior is exemplary.\u00a0 The story &#8220;The Patience of Hillel the Elder&#8221; appears in the Babylonian Talmud, Masechet Shabbat, page 31.\u00a0 The renowned Israeli author Dvora Omer adapted this tale for young children.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>One who with difficulty gets angry, and is easily appeased<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The man who tried to annoy Hillel the Elder chose an inconvenient time \u2013 just before the start of the Sabbath, while Hillel was washing himself \u2013 and a particularly rude topic \u2013 unusual physical appearances. He approached him and yelled disrespectfully: \u201cWho here is Hillel?\u201d, and when Hillel came out from the bath house, he asked him about the shape of the heads of immigrants from Babylonia. This question should have offended Hillel personally, as he himself had arrived from Babylonia just several years before.\u00a0 And yet, Hillel responded with moderation and to the point.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Mishnah teaches us to pay heed to the ease with which people become angry and the ease with which they are appeased. \u00a0\u201cOne who with difficulty gets angry, and is easily appeased&#8221; (Pirkei Avot, ch. 5, verse 14) refers to a person who remains calm and cool-headed.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">How does Hillel keep his mild temperament?\u00a0 Perhaps he believes in the good in people, and accepts what they do good-naturedly.\u00a0 What do you think?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":63391,"menu_order":4,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"episode_type":"","audio_file":"","podmotor_file_id":"","podmotor_episode_id":"","cover_image":"","cover_image_id":"","duration":"","filesize":"","filesize_raw":"","date_recorded":"","explicit":"","block":"","itunes_episode_number":"","itunes_title":"","itunes_season_number":"","itunes_episode_type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1011],"agegroup":[767],"book-subject":[1322,1142,1308,1195],"distribution_year":[1047],"class_list":{"0":"post-71217","1":"book","2":"type-book","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"hentry","7":"category--en","8":"agegroup-preschool-3-5","9":"book-subject-legend-en","10":"book-subject--en","11":"book-subject---en","13":"distribution_year-2011-2012"},"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
